Resume template guide

An ATS-friendly resume template that stays out of the parser's way.

You can write a strong resume and still have it read wrong, because the software had to guess its way through the layout. An ATS-friendly resume template takes the guessing out: one column, real text, and sections in the order you'd read them. None of it takes design skill, only restraint.

What makes an ATS-friendly resume template

The test is simple: could a program read the page from top to bottom without guessing? A two-column layout fails it. The parser has to work out which column comes first, and a wrong guess can put a job title next to the wrong dates.

Anything outside the normal flow of text raises the same question: tables, text boxes, decorative graphics. Plain headings, plain text and one clear order are what a parser handles best.

A single column resume template leaves the parser nothing to guess

Every CVMagnet template is a single column, laid out top to bottom, and automated tests run against every template in both PDF and Word:

  • No sidebars, and no layout tables in the Word file.
  • Your contact details and every skill stay in the text layer, where a parser reads them.
  • Headings extract as words: “Experience”, not “E X P E R I E N C E”.
  • Sections come out of the PDF in the order they're laid out on the page, and the Word file runs them in the same order.

6 designs, one structure underneath

The templates differ in look, not in layout. None puts anything in a page header or footer, a text box or an image, so your name and contact details sit in the body of the page, where every parser looks.

Classic

Pure black and white with bordered headings. The traditional Word-resume look.

Minimalist

Left-aligned header, hairline rules and near-black accents. Print-first.

Modern

Full-bleed colour header, heavy display name and a single-column body.

Professional

Classic's structure with an accent title, coloured dates and a full-width rule under every heading.

Simple

A clean, professional resume template designed to keep the focus on your experience, skills, and accomplishments.

Balanced

Summary, skills, experience and education in one column, under an accent rule.

Choose a font your reader's computer will have

A font matters most when your resume is opened in Word on someone else's machine. Every template comes in a set of standard, readable faces. Where a font can't legally be embedded in a PDF, the PDF uses its open twin, and the Word file names the original.

Inter

Modern sans-serif. Clean on screen and in print. Word substitutes a similar face if the reader hasn't installed Inter.

Calibri

Word's default sans-serif. The most familiar resume face there is. PDFs embed Carlito, an open twin with identical spacing.

Arial

The safest sans-serif. Installed on every machine.

Cambria

Word's default serif. Drawn for print legibility. PDFs embed Caladea, an open serif in the same style, set ~4% tighter.

Times New Roman

Traditional serif. Expected in law, academia and finance.

The ATS resume format is whichever file the application asks for

If the application names a format, send that one. If it doesn't, either PDF or Word works, and PDF is the usual default.

Every CVMagnet template exports as both PDF and Word (DOCX) with the same layout, so choosing one file type over the other doesn't change it. Our guide to PDF versus Word covers when each is the better choice, and when to paste plain text instead.

There's no blank template to retype into

You upload your resume, tailor it to a job, pick a template and colour, and download it. The template is applied to the resume you already have.

That's deliberate. Retyping a resume into a blank template is where typos and missing sections creep in, so there's no blank file to fill in.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Is there a free ATS resume template (DOCX and PDF)?

Yes. Every template, colour and font is on the free plan, and each template downloads as a Word (DOCX) file as well as a PDF. The free plan includes 3 tailored resumes a month — each with the keyword match and a full rewrite — and needs no credit card. The file you download is your own resume, in the template.

Will an ATS-friendly resume template get me past every ATS?

Nobody can honestly promise that, because every company configures its system differently, and CVMagnet doesn't promise it either. What a clean template does is take layout out of the equation as far as a template can, so the words on your resume are what gets read.

Should my contact details go in the page header?

No. Keep your name and contact details in the body of the page, which is where every CVMagnet template puts them, in the text layer a parser reads. A detail the parser can't read is one that may never reach the person reviewing applications.
