Resume keyword scanner

Resume keyword scanner: see which skills your resume is missing.

You read the job posting, then your own resume, and can't tell whether the skills the employer asks for are actually written on it. Guessing is how a required tool goes missing from an otherwise strong application. CVMagnet's resume keyword scanner takes the posting and your resume and shows, skill by skill, what's there and what isn't.

A resume keyword scanner that separates must-haves from bonuses

Paste the job posting and upload your resume. An AI model pulls the resume keywords from the job description into two lists. One holds the hard requirements: the technologies, tools and methods the posting says you need. The other holds the nice-to-haves the posting lists as a bonus. Each skill comes back marked found or missing on your resume.

What the job involves day to day goes into its own list, so a duty is never counted as a skill you lack.

The two lists stay apart all the way through. When your resume is tailored, required skills go at the front of the skills line, ahead of the preferred ones.

Found means the words are on your resume

The found-or-missing check is done by code, not by an AI model. A skill is marked found only when your resume's text contains it or one of its known variants, so the AI can't talk itself into a match.

The check reads the whole resume: skills, summary, headline, job titles, every bullet, education, certifications, and extra sections such as projects, publications and awards. A tool you only mention in a project bullet still counts. Interests are left out, because a hobby isn't proof of a skill.

Close variants count, and so does saying it your own way

Sometimes you meet a requirement in other words. Say a posting asks for relational databases and your resume says PostgreSQL. The tailoring step can point that out, but only by quoting the exact phrase from your resume, and code checks that the phrase is really there before the posting's term is used.

Some terms are simply interchangeable. A short, hand-picked list of them is treated as one skill, mostly software and cloud terms. It's kept small on purpose, so nothing counts as a match that a recruiter wouldn't accept. A few examples:

Kubernetes

also matches K8s

PostgreSQL

also matches Postgres

Amazon Web Services

also matches AWS

JavaScript

also matches JS and ES6

CI/CD

also matches continuous integration and continuous delivery

REST APIs

also matches RESTful API

Find missing keywords in your resume, then add only what's true

Some missing keywords are real gaps. Others are things you've done that never made it onto the page. Tick the missing keywords you actually have experience with, and CVMagnet works them into the tailored resume: onto the skills line, and into a bullet where one fits.

Only the terms you tick are added. The scanner never decides on your behalf that you know something, so nothing lands on your resume that you didn't vouch for.

No score, just the list of what to fix

CVMagnet doesn't give a match score, an ATS score or any percentage. A single number moves for reasons you can't act on, while the list of missing keywords shows exactly what to fix.

The report shows the keywords found, the keywords missing, and what was changed on your resume.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What file can I upload to the resume keyword scanner?

A PDF or DOCX file, up to 5 MB. CVMagnet checks the file type from the file's contents, not its name, so renaming a file won't get it through. Older .doc files aren't supported: open the file in Word, save it as .docx, and upload that version.

Can I paste a link to the job posting?

Not yet. Copy the text of the job description and paste it in instead. CVMagnet reads up to 8,000 characters of it, which covers almost every posting, including the company blurb and the benefits.

Is the resume keyword scanner really free?

Yes, with a free account. The free plan includes 3 tailored resumes a month — each with the keyword match and a full rewrite — and needs no credit card. Each scan comes with the rewrite, so one scan counts as one of those tailored resumes.
